Karkadann by Ultyzarus Karkadann by Ultyzarus
In legends the Karkadann is an unicorn-like Rhinoceros. I adaptated the idea and created my own version of the creature. The word means "Lord of the Desert".

Done in a few hours in photoshop. It depicts both the male and female Karkadann.

Description:

:bulletgreen:Karkadanns live in desertic areas and are omnivorous. The can use their claws and tusks to dig and find edible insects and plant roots if necessary.
They can reach a size of about 9 to 10 feet high (not counting their horn). Their ears are very large and their membranes are attached to the top of the creature's front legs. They are related to bears, and like them, can stand on their rear legs.

:bulletgreen:Their thick woolly fur varies between cream, greyish and pale brown tones. It acts as a heat protection. The end of their paws as well as their belly fur has a dark reddish-brown hue. Stripes of the same colors draw patternd on their back, tail and the top of their ears. They also have short black fur mixing to the reddish patterns on their faces.

:bulletgreen:Both males and females have a single horn on theit forehead as well as tusks, although the males tend to have longer crooked tusks. The main difference between the genders is the light-colored stripe that starts at the rear of the male's horn and ends at the end of their tail.

:bulletgreen:Karkadann meat is edible and quite nutritious, but locals don't eat them unless necessary. When they do, they use every part of the beast's body to make clothes, tools, etc. Since they can be tamed without too much trouble, they are often used as transportation for both people and goods.

I plan on adding some texts and/or literature in the comments or in the "Story" folder.
I'm not really a writer though...

This is an awesome creature design! I love how huge and solid they look, and I just love their ears! The stripes in their fur and the tusks and that crooked horn make the animals unique and fascinating, but still very very believable (as in, they totally look like they could exist in the real world).
Your painting is really stunning; you created a great desert atmosphere. And I absolutely love their grim faces (sorta reminded me of wolverines <3) and their hunchbacks.

Thanks, that is a lot of praise XD
I don't know why it is so, but my animal drawings often come out better than my average art XDD

Ha, fun fact, at least in some legends Karkadann are wolf-like giant unicorns who prey on elephants and other large creatures.

Yeah, it varies a lot depending on legends. The only thing that is always the same is the unique horn on the forehead. Was quite inspiring :)

Whoa this is really neat. They look like a combination of walrus, unicorn zebra and a woodchuck I love everything about it. I don't know if you intended this, but the foreground looks as though it is sloping down in front of them. Also what program do you use and do you use a tablet?

I like your description XD But actually it would be more like a mix of a Bear, Wooly Rhino, and a dog. I use photoshop 7 and a wacom tablet.

Actually I haven't decided XD I figure the male would have the longest tusks. But then again maybe the female has longest tusks for protection. What do you think? :P

I think the Male is on the right it looks a bit beefier for fighting other males for females. I think the Females horn could be shorter. It's all dependent on you though.

really cool, I usually imagine Karkadann as a heraldic rhino, with very prominent armoring as if it were plated and made of metal. But this almost prehistoric rendition, like a woolly rhino, is very interesting

I really like this one. I think the textures used for the fur and sand/background are nice. It definitely feels likes a desert setting, and I can imagine these giant creatures romping around out there. Great job as always!!
